HIV-positive and pregnant?

Worldwide, HIV affects as many women as men. In Europe the percentage of women with new infections is rising constantly. Today in Europe about 25 % of the people living with HIV are women (for example in Germany alone about 8000 women are HIV-positive). About 75 % of these women are age 20 to 40 and many of them wish to have children like most other people do at this age.

For most of the years since HIV was identified, the diagnosis of an HIV-infection in a pregnant woman almost always led to an abortion. Now, many HIV-positive women are thinking about having children again. This is possible because new drugs have dramatically changed the life of people with HIV. Equally important, is that new knowledge about the virus and its transmission allows precautions to be taken to prevent an infection of the unborn child.
